The website building process doesn’t have to be a difficult task. With different website builders in the market, you can create a stunning and beautiful website within a few hours. 

One famous name in the website builder industry is Wix. You might have come across the name if you’ve searched for the top website builders. 

But why has Wix become so popular? Well, frankly, it's due to its excellent editor, range of templates, and various E-Commerce features. 

Previously, I have reviewed various website builders, including Mailchimp and Big Cartel website builder. Recently, I saw Wix and thought why not create a detailed Wix website builder review? 

In this article, I will discuss everything about Wix website builder. From the website creation process and features to its pricing and competitions, I will help you know if it can cater to your needs. 

What is Wix?

Since its introduction in 2010, Wix has undergone various changes and improvements to establish its name in the website builder industry. With over 8 million websites, Wix can cater to your needs.

Wix is undoubtedly one of the most popular eCommerce platforms on the market. Apart from providing eCommerce services, I strongly believe Wix will also prove beneficial to individuals planning to create a personal website.

As I have used Wix before, I can vouch for its effectiveness. I would recommend Wix to anyone who wants to create a personalized website without having technical knowledge. 

With the Wix website builder, you don’t need any coding knowledge. So, you don’t need to worry about implementing CSS and HTML codes to create a professional interface. Depending on your familiarity, you can do anything within a few hours.

How to get started with Wix?

Getting started with Wix is super simple and intuitive. First, you need to choose a relevant template. This is one of the most important parts you need to know. 

However, you don’t need to worry while choosing a Wix template. It has more than 800 available options, allowing you to choose something perfect based on your needs. Whether you want to create a great website landing page, AI company, or construction page, you will always find a suitable template.

To test its effectiveness, I chose a Coming Soon Landing Page template, and it was pretty amazing. The template was very complete, with different options for different pages. 

This is the dashboard you will get when you edit the templates. Remember that you need to change the images manually. However, for the texts, you can use AI, which will fill in the relevant context. 

While most templates will automatically feature all the relevant pages you want, you can also add others. Truth be told, Wix has more options than any other website builder I’ve ever used. 

This includes core features like social media streams, photo galleries, maps, buttons, forms, and more. If you think the standard tool isn’t suitable, you can visit the Wix Store and browse through 500+ integrations. 

Blogs, eCommerce, and speed

If you want to set up a blog page on your website, you’re in for a treat. Wix allows you to add any element you want with a single click. I found this feature really beneficial, as it helped me create and manage the blog pages. 

Wix’s blogging feature isn’t as flexible as WordPress's. I have noticed a few minor issues, but they can be overlooked. Nevertheless, the blogging features will prove handy. 

Now, a similar thing happens with the eCommerce features. Wix cannot compete with eCommerce giants like WooCommerce or Shopify. Ecommerce is one of the areas of Wix, and they are trying their best to make improvements. 

There’s another important thing you need to know. Despite the audience and website, performance is extremely important. I have tested my website and can conclude that the Wix website builder is one of the fastest options. 

Wix review: Creating a website

Time to discuss an important point. The Wix website builder has changed a lot in terms of the creation process. Previously, it was a little bit complicated. But now, it’s easier than ever with superb ease of use. 

Now, when you click on the Start Designing option, this dashboard will open. From there, you can choose whether you want to create a website for yourself or for a client.

After this step, the real magic begins. This is where the latest AI features come into play. Wix introduced AI website builder features a few months ago to ensure everyone can create a website easily. 

But using the AI features isn’t mandatory. They themselves state that the AI can make mistakes. But I chose to go with the AI features to see how effectively it can understand my inputs. 

The AI will ask you some basic questions, and you need to answer them accordingly. Remember, the process can get extensive. So, be patient. And when you’re done, Wix will provide you with the primary dashboard. 

This is the main dashboard, which lets you control different aspects of your website. These are essential aspects. But to get to the main part, click on the Design Site option at the top left of the corner. 

Designing a website

The previous part that I explained was only the beginning. Now comes the main part. Here, you need to design your website and ensure that it captures your audience's attention. 

When you click on the “Design Site” box, Wix gives you two options: allow the AI to build the website or choose one of the many templates to customize it. 

I chose the first option as I wanted to check how effectively AI can build a website. Then, Wix asked me a few questions about my business. If you want to keep these details private, just leave the boxes and Wix won’t highlight them on your site. 

Wix templates

As I mentioned earlier, Wix offers more than 800 professional-looking templates. These templates are clean and capable of making your website look extraordinary. You just need to customize them according to your needs. 

However, remember that Wix templates aren't as responsive as WordPress templates. I have found some of them less responsive than others, with a few bugs and glitches. While these templates will ensure your website is optimized for both PC and mobile, you may experience occasional bugs. 

I didn’t face any problems while using these templates to build a website. Even if you do face some type of error, Wix’s advanced editor will help you make your website highly responsive. 

Now, let me share a thing or two about its vastness. The template library is so big that you will get overwhelmed. Thanks to the versatility, you will always find a template that suits your unique needs. 

For example, when I searched for gaming templates, Wix gave me only a few options. But then I searched for restaurant templates and found more than 40. Once you choose a template, you can use the editor to make relevant changes. 

Now comes an interesting part. If you’re building a restaurant website, the web pages will differ from those of a music website. From the website content and images to the pages and their optimization, everything will be 100% different. 

Wix understands this and provides templates with unique and relevant web pages. For example, if you select a music template, you will receive default links to Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc. 

On the other hand, if you’re planning to build a restaurant website, you will get different pages like menus and reservation charts. What an amazing thing, I must confess. 

In rare cases, you may fail to find a template suitable for your needs. In such cases, try using a close one to get started. I know it won’t be as effective as the specific templates, but it is better to move forward than sit idle. 

But if you don’t like these regular designs? You can use the blank pages. They come with various layouts but without any text or images. So, you can do whatever you want and customize it to a great extent. 

Despite your requirements, Wix ensures all of its templates are accessible to everyone. Moreover, you don’t need to sign in to view and customize those templates. So, visit the template page and choose the right one for you. 

Wix Website Editor

When you access the standard Wix editor, it will open a simple and intuitive dashboard. It will take most of your screen spaces, allowing you to focus on one page at a time without getting confused. 

I must say the first editing steps are quite straightforward. I have used many website builders before, but the editing process is super complicated. But with Wix, just hover your cursor over the section you want to edit and a Quick Edit button will appear. 

This is extremely beneficial as you can edit anything you want in a matter of seconds. When you click on it, a sidebar will appear with options to change captions, titles, images, and anything you want. It will streamline the editing process, even if you’re a beginner using the Wix site for the very first time. 

Let’s say you want to change a specific text. Just click on it and type what you want to include in your website. Yes, it’s that easy. When you right-click, you will get more advanced options. 

Customizability at its peak

I believe the default items on the web pages won’t quite work for you. At least for me, they never did, as I needed to change every aspect of my website. In such cases, the Wix editor will let you reposition and resize the elements as you like. 

One of the most eye-catching features of the Wix editor is that you can change the object position anywhere you want while also resizing it. This approach differs from the GoDaddy website builder, where you must drag and drop objects. 

Whether you’re a beginner or a professional website builder, you can customize your web pages easily. However, make sure you are patient as the website editor sometimes lag, even in Macbooks. 

If you’re a complete beginner, I would recommend choosing a template and then customizing it. Don’t start with blank pages, as you will face problems churning out ideas.

However, if you’re a professional, then things can be taken to an advanced level. This is what I’m about to discuss next. 

Advanced developer features

If the standard options look less customizable or easier for you, you must take a look at the advanced developer options. These will help you make your website more customized. 

But how? It’s because the editor comes with a Velo Dev mode, which will allow you to implement custom JavaScript codes. You can also use low-level APIs but remember that they will require extensive technical knowledge. 

Remember that the Wix Editor X is completely different from the standard editor. This is because the Editor X will feature high-end CSS-based grid layering with excellent design flexibility. 

As you can see from the image above, the dashboard is different from the standard edition. While it may not look much, the backend features are undoubtedly more complicated and advanced. 

Wix blogging

Do you know that Wix is a capable Ecommerce platform and a more than capable blogging platform? I will discuss the Ecommerce features next. So, for now, let’s see what Wix blogging has to offer. 

Wix always helps beginners start their first blog. As visual appearance is one of the most important aspects of a blog, Wix provides basic and advanced features. 

The process is also simple. Just go to the Wix Market and search for Wix Blog. Once you find it, just add it to your site. I’ve attached a screenshot of the blog page above. 

Furthermore, you can use the blog editor to create and edit new websites. For instance, you categorize them by their genre and theme, which will help you save time. Not to mention, your blogs will look more professional as you will be sticking to a consistent format. 

On the other hand, Wix will let you create feature-rich posts from scratch with images, texts, videos, graphics, downloadable files, etc. Unlike Squarespace, where you can create blog posts with limited options, Wix provides more advanced options for everyone. 

And the professional touches are also mind-blowing, particularly beneficial for content marketers and digital marketers. For instance, when you click on the Publish button, Wix won’t publish your blog posts immediately. Instead, it will give you options to promote your blog on social media platforms or via your email campaign. 

I also like Wix blog and post management features. These will help you schedule your posts, organize them, and categorize them as per their genre for easy finding. However, there’s one small disadvantage. 

Unlike WordPress and Squarespace, you cannot add multiple author names in your blog post. Let’s say you’re writing an article that is half written by someone else. In such cases, you cannot add their names to the byline. 

While Wix cannot match WordPress in terms of blogging capabilities, the features are certainly worth praising. Wix is undoubtedly a capable blogging platform. 

Wix ecommerce

I have been discussing a lot about Wix’s website builder and its features. So far, I have discussed how effectively it can help you build a business or a personal website. However, building an Ecommerce website requires a different approach. 

So, can Wix cater to its Ecommerce website owners? It absolutely can. Wix comes with a complete Ecommerce platform that will help you make your online store stand out from the crowd. 

They start showcasing their Ecommerce website builder feature with eye-catching templates. And yes, they have a separate template section with only Ecommerce templates. I can confidently say that you will certainly find a template that suits your needs. 

You will also receive support for selling digital and physical products, services, and dropshipping. Depending on your needs, you will find unique solutions. 

The best part is Wix is capable of handling different sales channels. It will also support selling your products and services on Amazon, eBay, TikTok, Instagram, and Google. But what about payments?

Surely, having an Ecommerce website means that you need to integrate one or multiple payment options. Wix has a dedicated feature called Wix Payments, which supports 80+ payment gateways, which will allow you to accept payments via PayPal, credit cards, debit cards, Google Pay, and Apple Pay. 

Unlike many other payment gateways, Wix also charges reasonable fees, with $2.9%+$0.30/credit card transaction in the United States. But this will vary depending on the country and the payment mode. 

But remember that creating and setting up a full-fledged Ecommerce store requires a lot of work. So, sometimes you might get confused about what your next move will be. Wix will help you a lot by providing a detailed walkthrough. 

You will find a helpful wizard provided by Wix, which will help you set up your website, implement payment gateways, and more. I also like the tutorials and how-to guides, which will help you get accustomed to the control panel. 

Wix SEO features

Let’s imagine a scenario. You have put a lot of effort and time into building a cool website. The design is flawless, with exceptional navigation. But despite all these efforts, you cannot see organic traffic to your website. 

The culprit behind such situations is poor SEO scores. You need to ensure your website is SEO-optimized so that you achieve higher SERP rankings. Without focusing on the SEO aspects, you won’t be able to grow your website. 

Wix will help you get started with the SEO basics for your website. While I can design the webpage with drag-and-drop content, Wix automatically implements necessary SEO practices like creating robots.txt files, managing the XML sitemap, and enhancing website speed. 

The new AI-powered SEO tool will analyze your website to understand the user intent and the search intent. This helps it to create the most effective meta tags. This is great news, whether you’re a beginner SEO enthusiast like me or a professional one. 

But sometimes, you may not like the AI suggestions. So, what should you do in such cases? Consider a few tweaks to the SEO aspects.

For example, you can find editable meta tags, title tags, and meta descriptions, enable AMP, or easily create structured data markup. This will help you Google highlight your website better in the search engine results pages. 

You will like Wix’s SEO panel. It comes with various tools to take manual control of your website. Thanks to the SEO Setup Checklist, you will receive new SEO recommendations to stand out from the other websites in your niche. 

To determine Wix’s effectiveness in handling the SEO aspects, I checked it on different websites, such as SEO Site Checkup. While it only informed me about the basic SEO setup, I wanted to know if it could live up to my expectations. 

And the results I received were more than average. While the score wasn’t perfect, there weren’t any fundamental SEO problems. Not to mention, I could tweak many aspects to improve the SEO score. 

Wix video features

When I used the video features, I found them highly complicated and confusing. However, Wix has changed its video features over the years. Now, they are more powerful yet less complicated. 

What I’m trying to implement here is that Wix now scores extremely high for its powerful built-in video features. You can upload any video you want (up to 15GB) into your library. You can also access the videos stored in your Google Drive and Dropbox. 

If you’re not a fan of the standard tools, you can visit the App Market. I did quite some research and found various apps that will help you embed video content from Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and others. 

Even if you’re using the free Wix plan, you can still host up to 30 minutes of videos. However, remember that the free bandwidth will be limited to 500MB. Now comes another interesting part. 

I was happy to see that Wix allows you to leverage the benefits of more video storage as you upgrade the pricing plan. For instance, the Business plan will give you 10 hours whereas the Business Elite plan drops it. Want to know how distinctive this feature is? Squarespace offers 30 minutes of video storage. 

You will also get streaming support for both mobile and laptop. But, I faced a few problems with this specific option. While choosing the Stream Now option, it only pointed to the iOS app, leaving the Android users. 

Wix app market

Wix’s in-built features are too extensive to count. They are just the tip of the iceberg, with more advanced features beneath for experienced users. The Wix App Market is one of them. 

The Wix App Market is the home of 500+ applications. They can help you add new design elements, embed social media platforms, integrate blog pages, and many more. 

I can say that the Wix App Market is extremely capable of standing apart from the competition. For example, Squarespace only recommends 40 extensions on its website, which is extremely low compared to Wix App Market. 

However, that doesn’t mean you will have much better choices. While there are loads of applications, most of them are niche-specific. Thus, only a few users will find all apps useful. 

Quite frankly, I was checking Wix review 2024 for each app to know their customer base. And, the results surprised me. While Wix has over 200 million users, most of these apps either have zero ratings or less than 2 ratings. Only a handful of them are rated over 100 times. 

If you want to use one of the niche apps, you won’t face any problems with their availability. You can also find numerous examples which will help you get started. I have found some excellent social media apps that you can embed in your blog posts. Moreover, you can also use the AI chatbots on your website, along with other sales, marketing, and shipping apps. 

Remember that only a few apps are free to use. Rest of them either have limited free plans or require users to purchase a premium plan. While the price will depend on the vendor, most of them are highly cost-effective. 

Overall, I would suggest everyone check the Wix App Market to see if those apps can cater to their needs. These apps will give you plenty of options to grow your website. But make sure you have a thorough knowledge and understanding of those apps before installing them.

Wix mobile apps

Recent reports stated that most people use their smartphones to access a website, especially Ecommerce websites. This is what Wix, Squarespace, and some other site builders provide custom Android and iOS mobile apps. 

Some of the most eye-catching features include creating blog posts, which will keep your productivity at its peak. You can also use the live chat feature to respond to your visitors. 

But the real benefit of the app is its effectiveness in managing your Ecommerce business. You can check various aspects of your business website right from the phone. You can take payments, check appointments, and explore other options. 

However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. I saw some poor reviews, most of them focused on poor speed, unreliability, and other issues. Also, you cannot edit your website from the mobile app. 

Wix security

As a business owner, you’re pretty much aware of the growing cyber threat. Hackers roam freely to get into your system and exploit sensitive data. Even one mistake from your side will make your website vulnerable. 

To ensure your site and the sensitive data don’t fall prey to hackers, you must ensure your website is secure and protected. Moreover, it will also let you protect your reputation and search engine ranking. 

While that’s a highly technical part, you don’t need to worry about handling the technical aspects. This is because Wix will manage all the complicated security processes for you. 

They will automatically create an SSL certificate for your website, which is one of the most important security features. This way, Wix users can navigate your website with a secure encrypted connection. 

Additionally, Wix complies with PCI DSS, another important security feature that protects credit and debit card information. Although they offer DDoS protection, there’s a slight catch. 

I read their security page thoroughly to understand their offerings. While I was getting confident, I couldn’t find any malware protection or removal feature. They only inform you to report if you spot a virus or malware. 

So, you need to play on the safe side, especially when there’s no official information on malware protection and removal. But how can you ensure your website is protected from Trojans and malware? This is where you need to consider account protection. 

Protect your Wix account

Sometimes, hackers will target your source target rather than just the website. If they get access to your account, it will be your doomsday. 

I have heard so much news about hackers gaining access to the primary dashboard and continuing to exploit data without a trace. So, how can you prevent them? Implementing additional security layers to protect website data.

When you go to your account settings, the first option you will see on the right side of the screen is Account Security. Wix knows the importance of this option and has made it as transparent as possible. I believe it's the best website builder in terms of security. 

The very first thing you need to do is turn on the 2-step verification. When you enable this, you need to enter a security code, your username, and your password to access your account. 

Wix will send you a one-time password via your SMS, email, or any authentication application. The choices are undoubtedly wider than those of many other website builder providers. Enabling the 2FA means implementing an additional security layer. 

But that’s not all. Wix lets you see the login history of your website. This page will help you know which laptop has access to your website, when, and where. Although the location isn’t accurate, the rest of the thighs are. 

There’s also an option to log out from all devices. This will come in handy if you see a suspicious login to your account. I recommend checking the login history once or twice a day to ensure everything’s in order. 

Wix hosting features

I’ve mentioned that Wix will help you build a website. But do you know that it takes care of your hosting needs too? Yes, Wix will let you host your website on its own server, and that too, without any extra cost. 

This approach is undoubtedly easier for beginners who don’t want to pay separately for hosting services. Apart from getting free SSL, you will also get a CDN to get speed boost. 

However, there’s one minor issue. If you register a domain and then buy a premium plan, you won’t receive the email features. In such cases, you need to purchase the Business email separately. 

Moreover, the upgrade options on Wix hosting are also limited compared to other website builders like GoDaddy. For instance, WordPress will let you upgrade to faster VPS cost-effectively. However, with Wix, you need to choose the more advanced Ecommerce plans. 

Wix AI tools

Wix comes with numerous AI-powered tools that will help you build your website. These features will help you handle as many tasks as you want. 

The Wix ADI will ask you a couple of questions about creating a website. Not only it’s easy to use, but also the results are extremely eye-catching. 

The editor also comes with interesting features. I personally like the AI Creator that will help you build a custom website. It will also have some excellent website sections like the About page, Welcome page, Team, Contact, Services, Promotions, and Subscribe. 

When I chose the Team option, Wix asked me to enter a few texts that would be included in the website copy. While relatively easier, you will be impressed by its features. The Wix AI Site Generator will help you generate AI sites at a whole new level. 

One obvious gain is that you don’t have to rely on your site to be on a list of possibilities any longer. If your business doesn’t fall into an apparent niche – an Italian restaurant that also includes a gym and a bookshop, say – just specify it in the prompt, and the AI Site Generator will consider it.

As a consequence, you should get better website results, faster than before, and less time spent manually updating. However, it will still require some updating to ensure that it is the right fit for your brand. 

Wix support

Wix support begins with the design of the dashboard and editor. When you click an image on a web page, buttons with clear explanations for typical activities (Change Image, Edit Image) appear. 

There's also a toolbar with little icons; if you don't recognize one, hovering your cursor over it will give you a brief description. Even if you've never used Wix before, it's simple to learn about and utilize the many features.

A search box directs you to the next level of help. Cannot see how to use PDF files on your website, for example? I entered PDF into the search box, and Wix directed us to Document Buttons (page elements that allow users to download documents), a handful of PDF-viewing applications, and helpful support papers for uploading and sharing PDFs and other files. 

Wix offers so many options that I couldn’t always discover what I wanted, but the Search bar always directed us to the correct place.

The content-packed web support section contains more thorough Wix help. Articles are divided into appropriate sections (‘Getting started’, ‘Creating your site’, ‘Managing your business’, ‘Promoting your site’, and more), or you may search for any keywords you need.

I’ve searched for ‘SEO' on Wix, and it produced 20 support articles. The top article, ‘Optimizing Your Site's Content for SEO,' has excellent information and links to several related publications if you want to learn more. It's nice, but I think Squarespace's SEO Checklist is better: it's longer, has more details, and offers more in-depth recommendations.

Wix website builder review: Pros and cons

If you've come this far, then you might have read that I have mentioned a few cons of Wix website builder before. But they are scattered throughout the article. To help you decide, let me share a detailed Wix website builder's pros and cons. 

Remember that no website builder is 100% perfect. Wix also shares its pros and cons. As the advantages outweigh the drawbacks, I recommend you try Wix once and test its features yourself.

How much to pay for Wix?

While creating a custom website may prove expensive, you can save a lot of money using Wix website builder. Wix provides four different plans to choose from: Light, Core, Business, and Business Elite. Each plan is designed with certain individuals in mind.

Wix also provides a free plan for all of its users. However, the free plan will show ads on your site, and you won't be able to connect to your custom domain. Moreover, it's limitation of 500MB storage and bandwidth will allow you only to try Wix before testing.

With the Light plan, you don't need to worry about such limitations. But if you're building an online store and need Ecommerce features, the Core or Business plan will prove most suitable. Lastly, the Business Elite plan is perfect for serious users with complicated needs.
